5th wheel travels: View from the back window travel blog

For our first outing, we decided we needed to go some place that was familiar. Having camped and boated at Bidwell Canyon State Park on Oroville Lake, we knew the campground and most importantly the road to the campground. Drought had taken its toll on the lake and most boaters had abandoned the lake, so getting reservations was easy. We pulled in on a Friday afternoon and were offered a deep site in the north loop. Backing the trailer in was a bit of a chore, it had a mind of its own, and when we did our parking lot practice, there were no trees attempting to attack the front end of the truck. We finally got it “good enough” until we realized that we had forgotten about the slides and one was too close to a close growing tree. 17 cuss words later, we were re-positioned and ready for setup, with full hookups available. We soon found out that when it is the upper 80s outside, the trailer is also the same temperature, and the A/C does not perform instant miracles. This is where we came up with the idea of a list; things we need to add or change (e.g. a fan to push air to the bedroom). As we gave up our boat for this new adventure, we were left to lake swimming, as we soon found out was not a good idea as the lake was draining fast and the last 10 feet was nothing but mud, my flip-flops gave their life to prove this fact. We instead retreated to watch movies on our 32” flat screen with A/C blowing (this is what we call boon-docking!). We decided that a short hike in the early morning was our best bet for something fun to do. We found it interesting that we had the “showcase” RV as most others were tents, older RVs or small travel trailers.

The view was real exciting, and we forgot to take picture anyway (first time jitters) but we did have a deer and rabbits come through and at least we are looking at nature and not someone’s RV.
