Cheryl drinking mate de coca


I started the day off by spending an hour in my room trying to figure out, with the aid of my Spanish dictionary, how to tell reception that my friend was coming this afternoon and that she would be sharing my room. Worked out all right... I went out walking for a bit and when I came back, Cheryl was on the other bed in my - our - room.

We went out walking for a little bit so that Cheryl could have a look around. Ate at a cute little pizza place on Gringo Alley. Cheryl had some mate de coca, or cocoa tea, because she wasn't feeling so great. Cocoa tea is made from the same plant that cocaine comes from and is supposed to help with acclimatisation to the altitude. A lot of Peruvians chew the leaves, and you can't take the tea or the leaves out of Peru.

After supper, we did some internet and headed back to the hostal and called it a night, hoping that Cheryl could sleep off the altitude sickness.
