Being on a deadline is not really the way to travel. Alas, when there are jobs to return to and ground to cover, it doesn't leave much time for sightseeing. Our next roadtrip, we'll have more free time to stop at destinations like the Ava Gardner museum, sites of Civil War battles, or historic plantations. But after trying to park in the dark the night before, we decided to make better time this day.
As if to test our dedication to this endurance run of a road trip, snag #2 blindsided us. Just a few miles out from Colleton State Park, a tire blew out on our trailer. Fortunately we had a spare, did a roadside switcheroo, and proceeded to the nearest Wal-Mart to buy a new spare and pick up a few essentials, like wine (yes, it's an essential!) Oops, not so fast - South Carolina still has blue laws (!) and wine is not sold on Sundays. Maybe that's to force people to go to church - they still serve wine there, right? Oh well, moving on to Roanoke Rapids, NC.
There's nothing quite like cooking over a wood fire. Jorge has mastered this art, and my taste buds are grateful! So despite the cold, we hunkered down again around our campfire, only slightly less enthusiastically this time. Roanoke Rapids is on a plain, where the wind is icy and the temperature plummets at night. This was the first evening we realized that some RVs (i.e. ours) are not made for freezing temperatures. Guess you could call this snag #3. Water and sewer hoses can and will freeze, leaving you without running water. Unless your RV has an arctic package, it's probably not well-sealed underneath the seats and cabinets, which allows a very nasty draft. The passive heat of the oil heater was not cutting it, so we developed a plan involving a fan heater, an electric blanket, and weather-sheeting for the windows, which would entail another trip to Wal-Mart.
The beautiful sunrise that greeted us seemed to mock the chilly night we'd spend huddling under down comforters. But with only 5 hours left to our final stop, nothing could dampen our enthusiasm. Well, except maybe snag #4...
