Toby-Sue Trip to the Gulf of Mexico 09-10 travel blog

Just a note to say we are back safely.

It was "quite" a challenging drive.

We left on Mon. We had a few things we had to do before we could leave, so hit the road about 10:00. Things were going great until we got into Iowa. From the Mn. border, to Des Moines (100 miles) we counted 66 cars, and a semi in the ditches. Most had rolled at least once by the looks of them. It was unbelievable. The roads for us were fine. These were left over from the holiday storm, but it REALLY slowed things down. We only got a little past KC, and got a room. We hit the road about 7:00 the next morning, and were expecting to make it back by that night. Well, in southern Okla. it started raining / snowing, and it never stopped until about 75 miles from POC (our park). We expected to get thru Dallas about 1:00, but with the slow weather, it was about 3:00. Sad for us, they let everyone off work early for the storm. It took 3 hours to get thru Dallas.

We kept on for a few more hours, then stopped to eat. I asked the waitress how far POC was. She had never heard of it. The next town is Victoria, that was at least four hours, and POC is 1.5 hours from there. Not getting there tonight. We got a room in Cameron, and both motels reinforced our decision to travel by RV. Besides being questionable, very expensive. We can stay here for a month for nearly what the rooms cost, plus meals.

We got up in the morning, and drove for about 4.5 hours, and a now tucked into our little home away from home. The sun is now shining, and it is in the high 50's. Not to shabby.

We had a GREAT time while we were home for the holidays, and will be glad to see you all in the spring.
