Ian & Lisa in Montevideo

Montevideo Beach

For us, Uruguay was a tale of 2 parts. First of all Montevideo basically had a lack of charm. While the old town was lovely and the Mercardo del Puerto, which was an old train station converted into restaurants and bars, was very atmospheric it all felt a bit sanitised for the tourists and was very expensive. One benefit of this was that realisation hit us when dining in an overpriced restaurant on mediocre steaks, that we weren´t actually on holiday and as travellers we should have been in the snack bar around the corner. This was a defining point in our trip.

And if anyone is planning on travelling to Uruguay, one tip is to not turn up on election day. Everything was shut, there was a ban on alcohol sales and the locals were just driving around in their cars beeping their horns, banging drums etc first of all in anticipation of the result, then in celebration. We didn´t get much sleep that night! Colonia on the other hand was lovely (see next update)!
