Tropical storm, earthquake, torrential downpours… another week in Mexico! The weather has been mental; when tropical storm Rick hit Mexico last Wednesday it didn’t stop raining, which is very unusual for Colima! The drainage system is non-existent as it doesn’t happen very often, so I found myself wading through water to get to the bus stop! I even lost my shoe in the road at one point which was quite embarrassing! Classes have been good this week with more people wanting to practise their English, and some who can speak well, but are desperate to pick up my British accent! I suggested to them to watch any Hugh Grant film if that’s all they want to improve! I also went out with some students this week to a car racing event in an airfield! It was so random, with people just sitting in the stands watching cars race along the runway! But it was a good opportunity to meet more people and see something different!

For the weekend I planned to get myself some sun, and head to my local beach, Manzanillo! I was gutted when I arrived in Manzanillo, which claims to have 350 days a year of sunshine, as it was raining again! I felt even worse for my friends who had come to meet me as one had travelled for 16 hrs to be greeted by overcast weather! But in true British style we headed to the beach straight away, and sat under an umbrella drinking Corona!

hostel pool

We stayed at this really nice hostel run by a Canadian couple in Santiago which had its own pool, and again the beers were uber cheap!

We went to see downtown in the afternoon which wasn’t that pretty, but we managed to find a restaurant with the biggest burgers ever, 4 in one bun! In the evening we went to a bar on the beachfront which had a Mexican band playing! They were really good, all the Mexicans were singing along but we didn’t really have a clue about the music!

surfing lesson

On Sunday the weather was beautiful, thank god! We headed down to the beach straight away to soak up the rays! We also attempted to surf and all had a surf lesson with Ricardo! It was such hard work and we all ached afterwards, but it was worth it as we all managed to stand up and ride a wave by the end of the lesson!

In the evening we went back to the bar on the beach with some Aussies we met at the hostel! I don’t think the people at the bar were too impressed that they had to keep it open all night just for us, and were chucking us out by the end!

Monday we chilled by the pool all day before we had to head back to our different cities. It was so nice to sit chill with the others and speak English before going back to speaking Spanish all week! And the best bit of the whole weekend, a trip to Walmart where we could buy pesto!
