SIZE=3>We decided to head south earlier than planned as the weather called for a rain/snow mix and we've had enough of that. Here was the scenery at 11 am and then the scenery again at 6pm...the rainbow came in between..makes you want to up and move here, doesn't it? I'm not sure how we can avoid drives like this in the future in our travels but we sure are going to try!
South Dakota has an interesting practice of putting signs on the sides of the road where there have been traffic fatalities. On some of the mountain passes and curves there just might be six or seven of these, some decorated with flowers and some with crosses like you see on the roads in Wisconsin. Maybe Wisconsin should try this and it would make people think? Especially those that have to drive like idiots up Hwy 55 on Friday afternoon to get to their cabins!
Another interesting practice in South Dakota are the gates on the entrance ramps to the interstates as well as flashing lights that say the road is closed and to go back to town. An employee at the Flying J said that last year the interstate was closed quite a bit due to blizzards.
We figured out the costs that we have been incurring since we left last week Thursday. In 10 days we have only spent about $50 for places to stay and $50 to eat out twice. Of course filling up the MonsterMobile is a small mortgage payment but it is priceless to take your home with you wherever you go especially with the pets. For example, right now we are parked in the Rosebud Casino parking lot about 10 miles from the Nebraska border. We went in and signed up for a players card and got $5 each and $1 drinks which helps Bill's beer budget. We then walked out and were able to get ready for the night. We are staying here for free with no hookups but tomorrow will stay for free at the Blue Ox headquarters in Pender OK with hookups. Sure beats hotels, rental cars and eating out all the time.
