Granstedt's Round the World Trip 2009 travel blog

We are today leaving Bonito and traveling to Foz de Iguazu in southern Brazil. Our bus departs at 14.30 and we won’t get to Foz until mid-day tomorrow. The distances are indeed very great here in South America.

Before the bus left for Foz we were relaxing and taking it easy by the pool in the hostel. The sun was shining and the weather was lovely. It was probably a bit too hot - need to savor these days as it’s going to get cold as we get closer to Argentina.

The only major upset today was that the hostel managed to forget to book our ticket to Foz yesterday. But it worked out fine - they still had seats on the bus. The staff at the hostel are very nice and hard working, but slightly disorganized. This is a bit frustrating but it’s a great hostel so definitely worth staying here. They have great excursions, a nice pool and nice rooms. Their burgers are also pretty good.

==================================================

By 2pm, we have arrived at the bus station in Bonito, which is 4/5 blocks away from the hostel itself. Consider that we had our heavy bags with us, we considered taking the taxi, but the pricy Brazilian taxi fare has put us off and we chose to walk in the baking sun instead.

The bus was already there when we arrive and after a quick ‘cooling down’ in the air conditioned waiting room, we jumped on the air conditioned bus. In the next 6 hours, as we traveled smoothly on the lovely paved road (a rarity in Bolivia), we went through vast flat land with brick red soil filled with fade green plants and the journey was fairly pleasant as the road was, for once, not bumpy.

We have to wait at the interchange for 3 hours before our connecting bus was due to depart 10pm local time. To fill the time, we tried to read some Spanish book for grade 2 Bolivian children before giving up to listen to music instead. We both agree grade 2 Bolivian children seems rather clever, or that, my Spanish is rather lacking. ;)

The connecting bus was a “cama” overnight bus, meaning that the seat can adjust to a fully reclined position just like a bed. The bus is also air conditioned. This bus is by far the best overnight bus we have been in so far in this trip (including the rather uncomfortably tight Japanese bus). The only complain I have got is that the air con was rather cold at night and I was gutted that I didn’t bring my sleeping bag with me as I didn’t think I will need it.

We woke up 7am local time for another change before arriving in Foz do Iguazu shortly before 10. For the first time we have been traveling in night buses, we woke up feeling well rested and that we couldn’t even remember we have been sleeping on a bus! Fantastic!
