A photo from the dump

I am happy to be able to write again after being out in the country for awhile. I came back to Phnom Penh yesterday and have been staying at an orphanage with some Americans and 20 boys! It's noisy and wonderful. Today, I went with some of the boys to the "dump." It's a trash heap where many people live. It was incredibly sad to see the living conditions. As we walked through, we saw babies wading in the water and people showering with the water! I helped out at the clinic and saw all kinds of illness (not unexpected). There were lots of children with lung infections, likely from the smoke they breathe when the trash is burned and possibly from TB. I saw a child with measles and a child who had had 1/2 of a brain tumor removed because the family could not remove the rest. It broke my heart.

The orphanage I'm staying in is clean and the boys are more well-behaved that any teenager I have met in the states. It's a neat opportunity to have. I will go to the dump tomorrow to see the midwives clinic and then return to the country on Saturday.
