The weather here in South Carolina has been pretty crappy. When we woke up this morning it was 43 degrees and the weather report claims that temperatures this week have been as much as 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. Despite the miserable weather we still managed to do a little sightseeing. On Thursday we went to the Congaree National Park. The Congaree is the newest National Park, it was established as a National Park in 2003. The Congaree River runs though the 22,000 acre park and much of the park is swampland. We walked along the 2.4 mile boardwalk that runs through a small portion of the park where we got to see all the different types of trees and foliage and read many interesting facts about the area. Luckily, probably because of the cool weather, the mosquito threat was low.
On Friday we went to the South Carolina State Fair. I don’t think it is quite as large as the New York State Fair but it had most of the same stuff. We spent the afternoon checking it all out and sampling some of the “fair food”. Of course, I had to try the “Deep Fried Pepsi” which turned out was not actually deep fried Pepsi but deep fried dough balls that after being fried were injected with some sort of Pepsi syrup and dusted with cinnamon sugar. They were pretty good but I wished I had tried the “Deep Fried Snicker Bar” instead. Next to the fair grounds was the University of South Carolina’s Gamecock Stadium, which looked pretty impressive from the parking lot.
