Hello All,
Well my dreams were finally realized today as I got to play a round of golf on the Old Course. I knew today was my last chance to get on so I got up at 3:30 am. I put on every layer of golf clothes I brought including my gloves, beanie or "woolie" as they call them here and headed out into the dark to get my spot in line. To my surprize I was the first one there at 4:00 am. By the time the starter arrived at 7:30 there were ten others behind me hoping to get one of the few open spots. My efforts payed off as I was able to get into the second tee time of the day at 8:10. As I tried to defrost and warm up on the first tee, the sun broke through the clouds and the wind stopped (thank you Lord!). My caddie told me I was very lucky and that this kind of day is rare at St. Andrews.
I wish I could say I brought the course to its knees but it was the other way around. The combination of the severe bunkers, my awe of the place and still frozen limbs didn't make for a very good score (87). It didn't matter to me (believe it or not) as I was enjoying the remarkable course history and insight that my caddie Charlie was giving me. I played with a local lad and two of his mates visiting from Norway. They were great company and we were laughing and smiling all day because we were all enjoying a sunny warm day in St. Andrews in October...Epic! The pace was very quick (4 hours) and I wish I had more time to take it all in. As I walked over the Swilken Bridge and onto the 18th green I was overcome with the 600+ year history of the golf links I was walking on. I know it probably sounds cheesy to you non-golfers but this is a golfer's dream and today my dream came true and it was a day I will never forget as long as I live!
Now it's off to North Berwick, Stirling & Edinburgh!
