We were up early to be on the field by 5:45 am. To start the day they have what they call the Dawn Patrol. They take off in the dark using position lighting systems that allow them to fly at night. The other balloonists on the ground then get an idea of wind speeds and direction at different altitudes. The "Albuquerque Box" is a weather phenomenon and is one of the reasons pilots come here to fly. It is the general shape of the flight pattern made possible by the wind conditions The balloonist can take off going south, rise into a wind traveling north then drop and come south again. We saw this happening and it is unbelievable how they travel...Today they have what they call the Special Shapes Rodeo where balloons of all different shapes are only allowed on the field. They are from all over the world and some are gigantic!!! Be sure to check out the pictures and look for the cow, pig, ladybug, elephant, frog, stork and more... In the evening they have the Special Shapes Glowdeo. Here all the special shapes are tethered to the ground and inflated. The crowd at interval times count down from 10 and they have either an "all glow" or a "flicker glow". It is so awe inspiring that words and pictures just don't do it justice.... This is a MUST DO and needs to be at the top of your bucket list....We would come back in a heart beat~~~
