Toured the Air Force Academy today. It is located on a hill side just north of Colorado Springs with a view of Colorado Springs. It is on 18000 acres and most of it is not developed. The Chapel is a well known building, the interior is just as impressive as the exterior. When the clouds move across the sun, the sunlight shining through the stained glass windows dramatically changes the look of the interior.
They had a picture of the typical dorm room and its pretty spartan with a single raised bed (like a bunk bed but no lower bunk) for each cadet and a desk/study area under the raised bed for each cadet. However, it seems these may be dated pictures based upon a google search I did regarding AFA dorm room pictures. Or maybe its just for the freshmen that the dorm rooms are so austere.
Today is Sunday and we visited in the afternoon and there were very few cadets in sight. Another tourist I talked to while I was there said maybe they were still recovering from the lost to Navy the day before ( 16-13 in OT). Okay, bad joke, but it was strange that there were very few cadets to be seen anywhere around campus. But then again, its a military school, they may not have that much personal time. Weather wise it was around 50 degrees, cloudy and windy, maybe it was the weather.
Only 14% of those who apply are admitted, around 1300 students are admitted for each freshman class, attrition is about 10% for the first year and is around 20% total by the time the freshman class graduates.
