Avoiding Winter 2009/10 travel blog

Well, are you sitting down?

We finally got all the health issues straightened out and we are on our way. We left Bellevue, OH on Saturday morning. David fought a head wind all day, which wasn't very pleasant. The PT Cruiser traveled well after we figured out that the dealership had strapped it down incorrectly.

We traveled down I75 to Corinth, KY to Three Springs Campground. I called ahead and asked if they could accommodate a 40 foot bus. She assured me that if we had leveling jacks, they had a pull through space for us.

Now, when one is asked if they have leveling jacks, wouldn't you think they would catch on? Not me. We drove about a mile down hill on the littlest narrow dirt road to a bitty campground. It was, however, a nice peaceful little valley, so I got out and went in and paid my $26. The young lady pointed to two abandoned single sites that they were using as a pull through. Well, it was more like pull across. If you have ever done any camping, you know that no two sites are level within themselves and never, never level with each other. We jockeyed the bus around for about 20 minutes trying to get it to where it could level itself with no luck. We gave up and decided to travel further down the road to a campground we had stayed at before.

So much for turning in early. To get out we would have had to cross two small bridges that were weak looking and narrow. We decided to unhook the PT, turn the bus around and hook up again. That part didn't really take all that long. I went back up to the office and had to explain that the site wasn't workable for large units. They didn't get it, but did tear up the receipt.

An hour and a half down the road we got to Walnut Meadow Campground in Berea, KY. They showed us to our campsite via golf cart, took our Passport America membership fee of $12 and we pulled into a nice gravel levelish site for the night. With a push of a button, Gurty put down roots, leveled us out and we are set. Well, yeah, David did have to get out and hook up the water, electricity, but that's acceptable.

Gotta love that Passport America. It saves half the night's fee at select campgrounds. We've saved the membership fee plus around $75 extra since we joined last January. We still have this whole trip to save just that much more. Sure helps when thinking about the cost of our fuel.

Until next time, stay well and warm.
