Thursday, October 01, 2009 - South Bend, Indiana to Des Moines West, Iowa

Brrr…it was 35 degrees outside this morning when we left South Bend heading west. Rain, rain and more rain as we drove through Indiana, Illinois and into Iowa. After 4 hours of we passed our intended destination, Davenport, it was around noon and we could drive another couple hundred miles and perhaps outrun this storm.

Kudos to Scott for driving 8 hours in the rain, I wouldn’t have lasted thirty minutes in a car! It wasn’t a good travel day for big trucks; a mile west of our RV park a semi slid off the road into a front yard. Later on an I-80 onramp an eighteen wheeler didn’t make the sharp curve and lay on its side. Deep into Iowa with corn fields flanking each side of I-80 we came to roaring stop and crept west for 25 minutes until we passed a several police cars and finally the semi stranded in the left lane facing the wrong direction.

We arrived safely at our KOA in Des Moines West and once we set up at the trailer the rain stopped for a few minutes and I snapped some photos of the fields around the RV park. I checked the internet for the weather conditions for tomorrow’s drive and our next stops; high wind advisories for Nebraska’s interior and cold, wet weather forecast in Colorado.
