Our tour continued the next day with a trip to the Great Wall of China. We were walking the Simatai to Jinshaling section which was 10 kms but our guide told us would take approx. 4 hours. The first view of the wall was fabulous – but also daunting as it looked seriously steep. We had 32 towers to climb up and down. H decided to do a couple of towers and returned to the comfort of the minibus with two other members of the group. The rest of us completed the wall in the 4 hours but we were stiff and sore afterwards. There were some seriously steep sections and a lot of this section of the wall was unrestored so it meant the climbing was often difficult. But we were rewarded when we got to the 32nd gate because rather than walk down to the car park we caught a flying fox (zipline). MS insisted J participate and she flew down no worries at all (in fact she completed the wall far more easily than some of the younger members of the group). We were very lucky that we had a bright, sunny day for our climb and the views were spectacular. We braved dinner by ourselves that night – a steamed dumpling place with no menu with pictures so MS just asked for a couple everything and we spent a grand total of £1 including beers all round to celebrate our great day on the wall.
