We left our Agriturismo in the mountains without knowing exactly where were staying for the next two nights. We had purposely left a little wiggle room in our schedule. We stumbled upon a beautiful agriturismo. Lori had her fingers crossed that they had room as we pulled up parking under a beautiful grapevine trellis. We were the only visitors that day and Lori was jumping for joy. The site was an old farm restored beautifully and meticulously decorated and maintained.
We left after unpacking for Montalcino to see the home of a superb red wine called Brunello di Montalcino. It was a 50 mi journey but a gorgeous ride through the Tuscan countryside. As we neared Montalcino, we were surprised how much the land resembled the Napa Valley. We toured the town and old fortress and tasted the wines at the tasting room called Enoteca la Fortezza.
The days are getting shorter even as we are here and after dinner it was already dark. Now we were fully dependant on the hiking GPS to get us home to Assisi and the evil little device decided the shortest route was through the medieval town alleys and down some dirt road that was on at least a 15% grade. Lori was not comfortable to say the least and we back-tracked ignoring the GPS and following signs with blue arrows until we reached the outside of the fortress walls. What a scary adventure that was. Now safely on the main roads we made it back to our agriturismo.
