Urfer Balloon Fiesta and Beyond Trip 2009 travel blog

Hi everyone. Well, we've been gone for 6 days now and still not far from home. We spent the first 4 days in St Augustine, FL - a mere 1 hour from home! We were at the first annual St Augustine Bike Festival. The first couple of days we spent riding our bikes around the town with some friends of ours that live in St Augustine. On Sunday we participated in the "Endless Summer Watermelon Ride. Up to this point the weather had been hot but nice. On Sunday it was cooler but rainy - what a day for a ride! But hey, we're on vacation so we did the ride. It was the first organized ride for our friend Garry and the longest he had done to date - quite an initiation!!! Jeff came up to try out his new time trial bike as well. We were wet and tired - but had a great time! On Monday we moved up to Santee SC (just a stop on our way to Asheville, NC tomorrow). It's still hot here during the day - but the nights - finally some cool weather!! Cool and dry. To our Florida friends - eat your hearts out!!! Today we visited the Santee National Wildlife Refuge on the banks of Lake Marion. It's claim to fame is it's the location of Fort Watson which was built by the British during the Revolutionary War. They held it only 4 months before having it taken by the Colonial troops. It's completely gone but there's a nice mound of dirt to look at!!! We did take a nice hike through the Pine Island area. Mostly it's a day of R&R! Chris & Roxanne
