Tim was heading off for some mountain biking in Sorata and I had been planning to go there as well so joined up for the trip. Tim persuaded me to borrow one of Ariel's bikes for the trips in hopes of turning me into a mountain biking chica I think.
Sorata is a really beautiful place. Very green and lush after the arid south of Bolivia and La Paz surrounds. The town sat at about 2700m and the snowcapped peaks behind it were at about 6500m. Unforunately the rainy season was still ending, so we only really saw the mountains in the morning, by mid morning the clouds would roll in over the mountain tops.
I went for a few hikes in the area, one with a guide where we climbed up to a Lake at 4200m and back down to Sorata. It was bloody freezing and cloudy up the top so we didn't stick around. Michelle, my fingertips went numb and didn't get any feeling back for about half an hour!
Tim hired a 4wd one day to take him up to a high pass, I think somewhere around 5000m so I went along for the ride. He started at the top in blowing snow and sleet riding down a rocky, barren slope.
We stayed at a campsite/hostel run by a lovely couple Roxana and Johny who made us feel at home. Very special place if you are ever in that part of the woods.
