We rode out of Thun with heavy hearts; but the ride up the Grimselpass can cure just about anything. As always with us, the sadness of leaving was soon replaced with the happiness of what we had experienced. Besides, 120 horsepower between your knees, and some of the best motorcycle roads in the world would lift anyones spirits.
We were going between family in Switzerland, and more of Barbie’s family in Kuchl (near Salzburg) Austria. We needed a few down days to rest, and get our all important journal caught up. We chose the Bavaian town of Fussen for our holiday from the vacation. Fussen was simply a place we chose on the map. The fact that the jewel of Bavaria, Schloss Neuschwanstein, was a few kilometers down the road was icing on the cake.
Our ride to Fussen was a little longer that we had anticipated (11 hours). We rode via Davos, Switzerland so we could take a few more mountain passes, and we did stop a couple of times, and they were longer than normal. We are really trying to have our big meal of the day at noon, instead of in the evening, so that takes time. We had a meal of wild boar and spatsle, at the top of Fluelapass; it was awesome. We ended up riding after dark for about an hour. Not our favorite thing to do, but of course we made out fine. Once again I appreciated our bike. I have never driven a vehicle of any kind that has a lighting system as good as this bike.
We had booked into a backpackers on line, so we didn’t have to spend time looking for a place to stay. Again we got lucky, we had a large private room in the backpackers, with the shared bathroom down the hall, and a short walk into town. They even provided breakfast for an incredible 2 euros! And, the all important internet wifi was free, and fast.
Our 3 days here were very relaxing. We did a short walk through Fussen’s old town, and tried the local beer (it passed the test!). The old town here goes back to the roman times. It was on the Via Claudia, built by the Emperor Claudius 41-54AD. The road ran between Altino, near present day Venice, and Augsburg, on the Danube River.
Our big day was a visit to Schloss Neuschwanstein, the fairy tail castle of ‘mad’ King Ludwig II. It’s really only about half finished, as construction ended with his death. The pics can tell that story.
The remainder of our time was spent at the backpackers, and a few walks to town for food, and even the odd beer. This is our second backpackers, and we really love them. The young people traveling really bring a special enthusiasm.
