Here we are, in Alaska. We've had huge fun everywhere, and Alaska gave us sun for the first time the locals had seen it in 16 days! Skagway is lovely, but crowded, so yesterday, after lunch, we headed up the valley on the White Pass train. Beautiful scenery, stunning drops off the tracks and over rather rickety-looking bridges, with diesel smoke blowing through our hair. Wow--it was grand. And when we got back to town at about 6:30, it was like a ghost place--the place that was lousy with tourists earlier was all but empty. They'd all been herded back to their ships, and off they went to sea, leaving us to roam the town and really see it. Wonderful. We've decided that cruise ships, for all their draws, aren't for us--too much like a cattle drive.
Whitehorse was also great. We met many of Clare and Ron's friends-some very nice people. The wedding was really lovely--the weather gods co-operated and it was not cold; the wind died down and was further deflected by large windscreens, the band was top notch, the bride and groom radiant. We danced until the closing hour, then the happy couple invited all back to the house for a nightcap. Many ended the night (or early morn) by the fire pit, but we packed it in about 2. Many laughs and great memories, and some good pictues!
We are not as dedicated to this site as I thought we might be initially. There is too much to do and Internet is hard to come by in some places. Know that we are both well, having lots of fun, and just really unwinding. Meg has all contact numbers if you need us. Tomorrow we head back to Whitehorse, one more night in the fine accommodations of Ravenwood (Clare and Ron's place), and then head south towards the ferry in Prince Rupert. That is on Sunday; I'm sure that I'll be able to update again there. I'm going to try and add a picture or two to this today, but if I can't, that might happen from the boat.
So, bye for now, love you all, and we are going bike riding until Clare and Ron meet us here for dinner. Tra la!
