Some history about Madekline Island

Other stop we made before arriving in the UP was Bayfield, WI. Bayfield sits on Lake Superior and is surrounded by the Apostle islands. There are 22 islands that make up the apostle islands. We spent two days exploring the area. The first day we decided to do some sea (lake really) kayaking. We signed up for an all day trip. They that took us to the other side of the peninsula where there are cliffs and numerous caves. We were in a double kayak and wetsuits, water temp averages 38 degrees in the lake but along the shore it was in the high 50's. We got very lucky that the weather was great and there were no waves, at times the waves get so heavy that you can't explore the cliffs and caves without risking your life. We paddled 2 1/2 miles along the cliff face, entering several caves and inlets. It was incredible, some of the caves are 50' high and equal width but only inches deep, others you have to duck your heads to get into. The cliff face is beautiful, it is made up of brownstone (sandstone)and is full of colors from the iron, manganese, and other minerals. The caves have been created by the waves and ice. The water is crystal clear and the bottom looks sandy, but when you get in a shallow area you realize that the bottom is smooth rock. After the 2 1/2 miles we stopped for lunch, sandwiches provided by the kayaking company, then returned via the same route. It was a great trip. The Apostle islands are uninhabited with exception of Madeline Island which has a small community and is connected to the main land via a ferry. We decide to tour the island one day, so we took the ferry over and spent a few hours in the small town by the ferry terminal. There was little to see and even less to do so we grabbed lunch and headed back. We spent the remainder of the day walking around Bayfield. Next stop L'Anse, MI on the upper peninsular and our friends Nancy and John
