Cedar, Wisconsin to Hinckley, Minnesota

The quickest way out of the Upper Peninsula is to Duluth and then south to Minneapolis. During the drive we realized there is so much more to Lake Superior than what we have seen.

The Circle Tour which goes around the entire lake, some 1300 miles, up through Canada and back... Given more time, we would have liked to travel up to Thunder Bay in Canada, but the rapidly approaching wedding and even before that, the Winnebago Grand Rally in Iowa prevent us from following our noses up into Canada again.

As we approach Duluth we can see why it is THE major port on Lake Superior... Railroad yards, graineries, iron ore loading, and who knows what else, is all there. The UP is mostly flat and then here’s Duluth sitting with a huge rock escarpment just south of it. It's quite a contrast.

We stopped at a viewing center on top of the escarpment to look back at the city, the lake, and the rivers leaving it. We're starting to get the feeling of just how small we are, and how big and beautiful this country of ours is...

On to Hinckley, Minnesota! Hinckley is a casino destination just north of Minneapolis. The road is a horrible washboard.

Many casinos do their best to attract customers. Some go so far as to put in beautifully landscaped campgrounds to attract the RVing folks. The casino in Hinckley, is typical, and it's large - 345 paved sites with grassy sideyards, all with electricty, water, sewer, and cable television hook ups. The casino provides free, on call, transportation between the campground and the casino as well as a pool, and ampitheather where major shows are presented, a general store, laundry, and a major RV repair facility right there on the grounds. There's not much shade, though, and we're grateful that mother nature is still keeping the temperatures in the reasonable range.

We used the laundry facilities (laundry night is Sunday) and gambled a bit. Won nothing! We partook of the dinner special in one of the casino restaurants - $7.99 for prime rib.

The next morning we're off to Clear Lake, Iowa, the Winnebago Plant in Forest City, and the Grand National Winnebago Rally, still with no airconditioning in the coach.
