Anna and Michael's Euro Road Trip 2009 travel blog

A & M: Didn’t wake up until 10.30 – caught up on missing previous nights sleep. There was so much shade with the trees it kept the van cool until early morning, which was bliss. A hot van isn’t always the nicest place to sleep in this weather! A glorious day with spectacular scenery, truly breath taking along the Dalmatia coastal road and National Park. So with the sun shining and barely a cloud in the sky the scene was set. This has to be the very best coastal drive we have ever done and will take some beating if it ever can be beaten? Staying off the inland motorway was the best decision ever, okay we could have got to our final destination an hour or so quicker but hey where’s the fun in that? We will definitely return here, what a spot. From the coast road you can see islands popping up out of the azure blue Adriatic sea and every turn of the coast road brings a fresh vista of some delightful cove be it wild or tamed! You just want to stop at every opportunity for a dip in the sea, though that would triple our journey time and we would never leave Croatia. Which is why we know we will return!

A: Michael insisted I have a go at driving, to his peril – I pulled over and let him resume when I nearly missed a right turn almost tipping Myrtle over and then couldn’t get it in gear. I think I might be relieved of driving duties for a long time to come!!! Stopped briefly in the National Park for lunch which was stunning – the scenery not the tuna sandwiches, although they were mighty fine also!! Made our last coastal overnight stop at a campsite nestled in the rocks somewhere between Karlobag and Senj. Very close to the beach again and had a very welcome swim in the Adriatic as soon as we got here! Nice and small campsite, lovely restaurant and bar where we tried the local schnapps (more like clear whiskey!), cheap as chips as well – we’ll make a note of this one!

M: From here we now turn East and inland, we will not set eyes on the sea again until we return and cross the English Channel.

Weather: Hot with lovely sea breeze!
