The herd of Musk Ox

Today was spent taking in the sights of Fairbanks. We learned that they get only (our source at the gift store) 40 inches of snow and temperatures reach -30. In the past the temperature would reach -50 but with the global warming ……… Charlotte and her tourist book information led me to the Pioneer Park for most of the day. We were planning on attending a great Museum that was touted in Charlotte’ s book, but when I asked for the address she realized that she was reading the Anchorage information not Fairbanks.

The Pioneer Park was a collection of Museums, Air, Steamboat, Pioneer and native. We only missed one. The flowers were beautiful and the shops were unique. Each shop building was an old building constructed in the late 1800 or early 1900s. We agree that the pioneers must have been shorter, as the ceiling heights and door way were short. In addition the building were small, a hardy bunch of pioneers.

We also visited the Large Animal Research farm to see Musk Ox, Caribou and Reindeer. Interesting fact, Caribou and Reindeer are the same animal, the Reindeer are domesticated, QC did not know this little known fact.

Dinner was at the Turtle, north of town, recommended by a lady in the restroom at Beaver Creek, prime rib and a excellent salad bar. The food was great and luckily we had a reservation, our 1st in Alaska, it was packed with locals. We ordered the medium size prime rib to allow us a take trailer (as opposed to home) container, stocking up for the primitive camping in the park.

It is getting cooler, mostly in the 60’s and if the wind is blowing, QC and I are bundled up with our layers. Just as we can spot a tourist in TX, white legs and black socks in the summer, the natives in Alaska, in their short sleeves and shorts, can spot the tourist, three layers and gloves plus a hand full of what to do papers.

Love to all.
