Today’s route took us across the UP on US 2 and then we crossed the Straits of Mackinac on the I75 Bridge. Along the way you pass the northernmost point in Lake Michigan (See picture of Historical Marker). US 2 is a pretty ride as the north shore of Lake Michigan looks like the ocean in a lot of places, with sand dunes, sandy beaches, waves, and a couple of lighthouses. The only problem is the water and air temperature is more like Nova Scotia. I was going to wade into the lake, but thought my feet my freeze. The most notable town was Manistique, again a resort town. The most obvious thing about the resorts is that there doesn’t appear to be anybody vacationing. It’s either because the weather is too cold (so much for global warming) or the economy is too cold. Besides the missing vacationers, there are a lot of motels, cabins, and restaurants for sale as well as lake front land and houses. Michigan appears to be hurting.
