We are in Port Clinton so we can take a boat ride out to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island to visit the Oliver Hazard Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial. Perry was the guy who took on the British fleet in Lake Erie, you know, during The War of 1812. The US was sure that Britain was supplying the Native American Indians in their struggle against rapid and unorganized settlements. There were 5 British ships in Put-in-Bay and the American ships had broken their supply line. The British Commander had to engage. The battle on Lake Erie took just under 3 hours and Perry was victorious. We have had peace with Britain and Canada ever since. There now stands a 352 foot Doric column over Lake Erie. It was started in 1912 and completed in 1915. In October of this year the Memorial will close for a 3 year facelift and be all ready for the Bicentennial in 2012.

Our boat ride out to South Bass Island was on a jet powered catamaran. The trip took about 20 minutes and was smooth as silk. Once on the island we rented a 4 person golf cart to drive around for a couple of hours. After visiting the Memorial, we went to check out a local winery. That's right, a winery. They have been growing grapes on this island for over 150 years!! We also went into the Crystal Cave, the largest known geode in the world. It is about 39 feet across and 8 feet high. We also saw the biggest bar in the world. It's over 400 feet long. You know for a little island it sure has a lot of "the biggest" in the world.

We leave here tomorrow and go to Streestboro, OH which is just outside of Cleveland.

The adventure continues,

Ken
