Day 83. 241 miles today; 8457.5 total miles this trip.

We are on Day 55 of our 58 day tour.

August 3, 2009

From Dease Lake we drove into Stewart, BC. We started the day with some horses on the road just as we were coming out and heading down the road. From there it was mostly just driving until we got close to Stewart. The drive was a beautiful one though, perhaps one of the most underrated drives on the trip.We paused near the Bear Glacier to get a few photos, but we didn’t linger given the number of glaciers we had already seen.

When we arrived it was still mid-afternoon. We had a travel brief and info on bear viewing, then we were on the way to see the bears in nearby Hyder, Alaska at the US National Fish Creek Wildlife Viewing Center . We arrived about 5:30 and didn’t see anything other than spawning salmon. These were chum salmon, and they were big but not the striking red that we had seen in Juneau. The salmon were entertaining for awhile, but by about 7:00 we were about to give up when a bear came loping down the stream. She spent about 1-1/2 hour chasing fish, eating, and wondering around. We watched her, took lots of photos and movies, then went thru Canadian Customs to go back to Stewart for a great dinner at Bitter Creek Café. That was our day. Tomorrow we have a free day in Stewart / Hyder.
