The Homer Spit!
We got on the road sometime around 11:00 this morning. The campground host must have seen us pulling out because he stepped of of their RV, waved and hollered “Nice having you as guests.” The couple hosting this campground were so nice. They greeted us when we rolled in the other night with smiles. I didn't catch their names but she got all the paperwork together then he made sure we got backed in OK and gave us all kinds of good information for things to do around town. Just nice, down to earth people. They were Escapees and their number was in the 500's so that was pretty neat in and of itself.
Once we got on the road we drove on down to Homer with one stop at a look out where we could see the volcanoes across the Cook Inlet. It was kind of hazy today so it wasn't a great view but it was clearer there than it had been yesterday in Kenai. It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow so we may drive up north again in the afternoon and see what we can see.
When we arrived in Homer we drove on down to the spit and drove out to the end to check things out. There was more going on down toward the end than I expected there would be. We had seen Mariner Campground at the beginning and it had a beach so that was something we were keeping in mind. The shops looked cute further down but we aren't really ones for large crowds so we decided to go back and camp on the more quiet beach and then ride our bikes down to the busier part of the spit when we wanted to do that kind of stuff and am I glad we did. We have some nice neighbors and a great view so the sunset each evening. The mountains drop down into Kachemak Bay. It's really breathtaking.
We got the RV set up then took a walk down to the water. Jonathan wanted to pull his boots out and play for a bit then we came back up and just relaxed for the rest of the afternoon and evening. I called my mom and Tom called his mom and talked for a while. We had a neighbor come spot our satellite dish so he came over with his dog Molly. Jonathan got to run and walk Molly on the beach while Ted and I talked for a while. When Tom was done talking on the phone, he and Ted talked shop. Turns out Ted had worked for IBM too at one point. He still works in computers and is working from the road part time.
We had breakfast for dinner then went outside and visited with another neighbor for a while. He was from Florida. The temperature was dropping though so we all decided we would watch the sun set from inside.
Work starts up again for Tom tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be sunny tomorrow too so Jonathan and I will probably do something on the spit and along the beach tomorrow then there's an Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in town for later in the week. Right now rain is predicted so we'll see what happens.
It's actually getting dark for the first time all summer lately. It doesn't get dark until late but the moon came up tonight. It's the first time we've seen the moon all summer.
