Huacachina is 5kms from Ica and is an oasis with a lagoon surrounded by sand dunes. It´s a massive backpacker party town for people coming to sandboard in the nearby dunes, made more crazy by the occurance of a Peruvian national holiday while we were there and according to locals, the biggest drinking days of the year. Most hostels were packed but we managed to find a room in the main hostel there which had a pool and disco with nightly all you can drink bbqs. Yep, it was messy and we ran into some other travellers we had met a few months back which was great to catch up over more rum and cokes and Pisco Sours than I care to (or can) remember.

Amist all the socialing we did get into sandboarding also - Chris two times and me once. Sandboarding isn´t the only thrill however, its actually surviving the manical driving of the dune buggy drivers. Safe it aint, one of the girls helpfully told us how someone had broke their neck coming down one of the hills a few months back. But luckily we made it through scratch free, although we are still digging the sand out of our clothes and shoes.

Sadly we were only able to spend a few days here relaxing in this bizare enviroment before packing up yesterday with our hangovers and taking two buses, a five hour and eight hour, ending up in Huaraz this morning at 6am to take some treks through the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, supposedly one of the most scenic areas in Peru.
