It was a chaotic border crossing into Malawi. Total confusion and lots of bureacracy.

Very hungry, very haunted-looking Somalian refugees were loitering at the border hoping for food, a ride - any change to their circumstances. In our travels, we've built up a necessary resistance to always being asked to buy things, to give things, to help. It's heartbreaking to realize how many people are in need. How much you have, how little they do. Seeing these desperate people had us talking for days about what we would have or could have done for them rather than pass them by. No easy answers to report back, just lingering unease over the injustices of life and how lucky we are to have been born in the US and New Zealand.

We eventually crossed into Zambia and drove through Malawi to the bustling border town of Chipata. Very beautiful mountains and scenery in the North of Mozambique and South of Malawi. We stayed the night at a pleasant campground run by a very chatty English guy. He gave some very helpful advise about where to stay in South Luangwa Park.
