We spent 3 hot, sultry days in Monterrico, a lazy fishing village on the black volcanic sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean. The village is technically an island surrounded by mangrove swamps and the powerful surf of the ocean. Besides body-surfing the rough surf and rip-tides, the chief attraction is the nature preserve where there are caimans, turtles, egrets, and many endangered fish and bird species.
We made this last-minute addition to our itinerary when we discovered that our airplane tickets from Guatemala to the Yucatan did not exist, thanks to a mis-communication with our on-line travel agent. We quickly fixed our transportation problem and decided to spend our extra three days at the beach.
