We are still camped at our first location of our road trip -- June Lake, CA. We will be here until July 19th. The scenery around June Lake is spectacular. The daytime temperature is about 75 degrees and the evenings get downright chilly at about 40 degrees. In the middle of July, I can't believe I need to wear a jacket once the sun goes down! There are over 400 high alpine lakes in the general vicinity. There are numerous side destinations we will be taking to National Parks,Forests and Monuments.
The postings from us will be dictated by how long we can run our generator in the trailer to manufacture electricity to run this computer. We are "dry camping" meaning no electricity, water or sewage hookups at our camp site. So the only time I can get on the computer to post these updates is every few days until we reach our second stop of the trip on the 19th which will be the Kern River in Kernville, CA.
Here is the highlight since the last post of July 4th:
July 4th: we went to the ski resort town of Mammoth for a pancake breakfast and watched the local Forth of July parade. Later in the evening we all went to Crowley Lake to watch the fireworks display and have a tailgate dinner of BBQ hot dogs, chili, sausages and beer.
July 5th: we said goodbye to the Stewart clan as they all headed back to their homes. We will be hooking up again with Scotty and Dee Stewart in a few weeks when we get up to Idaho.
July 8th: Mary and I went into Mammoth to do laundry (after a week of camping) and decided to check out the fishing at some different lakes. We tried our luck at Lake Mary no fish caught there. I should clarify I tried my best since Mary does not eat fish nor does she enjoy fishing, she does enjoy the hikes into the lakes and is one with nature enjoying the beauty of God's creations, as I enjoy the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat --- man against the willy fish! In honor of my cousin George we decided to hike in and fish a lake named after him, Lake George. Here the game changed for me, 7 Rainbow Trout hooked (all on lures) and 4 fish landed. All this is in about an hour and a half. They averaged 1 1/2 pounds each. This is a great size for trout. I guess it is the alpine lakes with the very cold snow melt water that helps in growing these fish to that size. I will be eating trout for dinner tonight and the rest will be saved for Saturday evening when our friends Craig and Sharon join us for a couple of weeks. We ended the day having dinner at a BBQ restaurant Bodie Mike's in nearby Lee Vining.
