As we had a couple of days spare we decided that it would be good to catch the ferry over to Tallinn in Estonia and check out our first eastern European country. On the map it looked like a very short trip but we soon discovered that it 1hr 45min from the port in Helsinki.
As the boat began to pick up speed we noticed things were getting quite rocky and I started to worry that it was going to be a rather unpleasant journey as I have suffered sea sicknesses in the past. Well it was an unpleasant journey but surprisingly the suffering was experienced by Joycee rather than me. Suffice to say that by the time we reached Tallinn, there were lots of smashed bottles in the bar that had fallen off the shelf and there were no paper bags left as Joycee obviously doesn't have her father's sea captain legs!
We found Tallinn to be an interesting city that was still struggling to catch up after its communist past. Sadly it has clearly become a stag party destination for people from the more wealthy western european countries and the hordes of drunken revellers successfully ruined the historic feel of the old city.
We didn't fall in love with Estonia during our visit to Tallinn but think other parts of the country (ie. the nature, hiking etc) may offer more attraction especially if we were able to head there during the warmer months.
