the church in San Juan Del Sur

the parade with the dancing Jesus

I think I have figured out the secret to getting more people out to church. FIREWORKS!!!! Yes many fireworks that are very loud. I am not sure if this will be successful in Canada, but in SJDS we were woken very early by loud booming noises. Perhaps it was an alarm clock for people planning on going to service, to not so gently remind them it was time to get up and get ready. So much for our plan of sleeping in. After breakfast we were standing around talking and we heard music. We went out on to the balcony, to see a parade starting by the church. There were many people, and four people were carrying a platform with a statue of Jesus on top of it. They were dancing with Jesus. They marched right down our street, playing music and dancing with Jesus. We found out later that later this month is the day of San Juan, and in anticipation there is a big build up. Today was going to be our last day in SJDS and Cory and Elaine took a walk to the cemetery. Cemeteries in Central America are not like you would find in Canada. They may exist, but nowhere that they have seen yet. It appears from the graveyard that people are not buried 6 feet under. They appear to be buried in crypts above ground. Some are old and plain, and the newer ones are covered in ceramic tile. Cory and Elaine wandered around and took some pictures. The other thing that was worth noting was the happy colours of blues and purples. Hopefully you can see from some of the pictures why they took them.
