Thank you Sri Lankan Airways, you offered the best south India-Bangkok fare and you included a stop-over in Colombo! I love good deals like this.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that our included accomodation in Sri Lanka was indeed better quality than any other place I've found on my own. We were smack-dab on the beach front and had rooms with a sea-view, TV, AC and built-in sound system. Not a bad deal. I spent the afternoon lounging in a beach chair under a giant umbrella (lest I forget my sunburn ordeal in Varkala) and making friends with Linda, a mother of two bar manager from Reading (sp?) outside of London. She has been travelling Southeast Asia for about 7 years now and was invaluable for basic advice and also great company. A gorgeous sunset, sumptuous buffet, and I was out for the count, considering my 4am wakeup call for the next morning flight.
I know that Sri Lanka was truly devastated by the tsunami, as was many parts of southern Thailand. I talked to a guy who worked in the restaurant, and he said the bottom floor of the hotel was flooded, but 'nothing out of the ordinary.' It's hard to get a grasp of the level of destruction by looking at buildings already back up and running, but I hope to get a feel for the devastation while in Thailand, if only to thwart whatever taint the media has given me about the event.
Sorry, no photos, but it's beautiful. Take my word for it, a sunset I won't forget.
