Sat, May 30 (day 20): Bonners Ferry, ID. (Graduation)
Picked up my dad and joined the family for breakfast at the Kootenay River Inn, where the rest of the out-of-towners were staying. It has an indoor poor, and my nephew and his kids love the water. There were 14 of us total! Besides my brother and his family (4)
, my sister and brother-in-law, our dad, Diane’s mom, my nephew and his family (4), and Bill and me. Nathan (my sister’s oldest son), Christina, his wife, and their children, Piper and Bailey, drove up from Boise, ID, and Diane’s mom, Maxine, who came up from Coeur’ d’ Alene. She left on Sunday to fly to Florida on Monday for another grandchild’s graduation. All of this, and she’s 82! Connie and Kevin drove to Denver, flew to Spokane, WA, rented a car, and drove to Bonners Ferry, stayed two days and did it all in reverse–all in four days! They really enjoyed the nice weather; they are at 10,000 feet in CO, and it’s still very cold there. Back to breakfast: The view (the Kootenay River), company, and food were all great!
Afterwords, we all trekked to the Farmers’ Market in nearby downtown. Piper got a pink garland wreath to wear for graduation, Diane and I both got fresh spinach, and I also got a home-made spanikopita. I touched bases with the massage therapist who was doing chair massages there and set up an appointment for Sunday (Diane had given me a gift card that was given to her). The weather was perfect, hot even! Everyone was excited since they always plan to have the graduation outside, but it is seldom nice enough.
We parted ways, and Bill and I went to the health food store to stock up for the rest of the trip and then home to rest and dress for the graduation at 1:00. Since we were only a few blocks away, we took hats, water, and cushions, and walked over, finding a spot in the shaded bleachers on the top row (for our backs). Kevin, Nathan, Maxine, and Pete (my dad) all sat on the infield (with several hundred others) and got very sunburned.
The ceremony was quite nice, with four student speeches and two faculty speaking. The backdrop for the football/track field was beautiful, many shades of green–grass and trees. We met everyone on the field afterwords,
then walked back to our trailer, while most of the rest of the town (many businesses were closed for graduation!) fought the traffic. Had a special treat of Rice Dream bars we had picked up at the health food store and stashed in our tiny freezer, turned the fan on high, and then napped. Got up, gave up, and turned on the noisy a/c–you’d think we were in NM!
After dinner, we both worked on the computer some, Bill did dishes, and then we drove out to the Wildlife Refuge on the edge of town. We saw LOTS of white-tailed deer, ducks, and Canadian geese (including three goslings), but no moose. We later found out that the Dougherty gang had seen two on the refuge (we saw one last time we visited). We stopped by the pool at the motel to visit a bit, and called it a night.
