Cooking in Colorado

Mesa Verde, Colorado

Delicate Arche, Utah

Heading north through New Mexico, we reach Roswell, famous for the 1947 'UFO crash landing'. The museum here is rather run down and given a month I could probably recreate it through internet research. The actual incident was on a ranch some 70 miles from Roswell, but such is the vastness of this country, Roswell was the nearest town and thus famed for the crashed weather balloon, I mean aliens!

Much more impressive, and unlike anything we've seen so far is the charming town of Sante Fe, capital of New Mexico. All the architecture is Spanish and the whole place has a feeling of class and wealth - the cowboys hats I was interested in started at $725. We had some authentic New Mexican food in a local restaurant.

The next day went north through Colorado, stopping for a drink in an old salloon in Durango. Our second national park of the trip was Mesa Verde, established by Theodore Roosevelt and the only one designated this status for archiological reasons. Some well preserved cliff settlements of the Anasazi, dating back to the 13th Century were very impressive.

On into Utah and an evening hike in Arches national park: Huge arches formed within Jurassic aged sandstones, framing the distant mountains with the sun going down was a spectacular way to end the day. Staying in Moab, we did a nice 6 mile hike in the NP, starting at 7pm. Away to Eddie McStiff's, the local pub later on.
