Our trip to the capital of South Dakota, Pierre, proved to be an interesting day. Leaving early in the morning, we drove across the open range land and then crossed the Missouri River. The walk began along the hike and bike trail along the Missouri River. A former mayor of Pierre received inspiration for this trail after visiting the Riverwalk in San Antonio. It now provides park and camping facilities over 2 miles along the river.
Our walk continued through the historical residential area to another popular walking and recreation area, Hilgers Gulch. This park provided an exceptional view of the capitol building. When we arrived on the capitol grounds, we walked among the various memorial to the military forces that participated in WWII, Korea and Vietam. The Memorial area also included a tribute to a former governor, George Mickelson and 7 others who were killed in a plane crash in 1993. The sculpture is a replica of a mahogany carving done by the sculptor who began the Crazy Horse Monument.
Suanne and I were amazed by the friendliness of everyone in the capitol building. As we were wandering the halls, a gentelman came out of the Supreme Court chambbers and greeted us. As we were talking, another person came down the hall and greeted the gentleman as "Justice". Apparently we had been conversing with one of the Supreme Court Justices without realizing it. In the Governors outer office we also had a very nice conversation with the Governors administrative assistant.
We've posted a number of pictures of what Suanne and I believe is one of the nicer state capitals.
