AWT May 5 Key West
Down the road to Key West is a road a 100 miles long from the mainland USA. Hwy 1 to Key West travels across 42 bridges linking islands together. One bridge is 7 miles long. The Hwy. 1 route use to be a railroad line. Our RV spot took us to Lazy Lakes RV park about 18 miles from Key West.
Key West where normal ends and party time starts. Mile marker “0” on Hwy. 1 and the most southern point in the continental USA. Old town Key West, about a mile square, has narrow streets, parking problems, lots of places to eat and drink, lots of history, fishing sea port, sand beaches with more sun and cultural diversity.
First on the agenda is to find a parking spot. Gotter done. So here we go.
We arranged for a tour to Tortugas National Park and a sunset dinner cruise on a sail schooner for Mothers Day. (See the Pictures)
The Conch city train tour ride was fun and interesting as it took us through the city and was told about the history and who is who in old town Key West. Getting around Key West streets had many answers such as bicycles built for two, motor scooters, bike taxies, electric cars and skateboards etc.
People watching along the main street called Duvall can entertain one easily.(see the pictures)
Blond Giraffe Key lime pie factory made 800 pies a day just for local area.
1847 Key West Light house tied in with the ship wreck museum.
The side walk cafes such as Bo’s (picture) were on every street corner and more.
The Key West Cemetery is an above ground cemetery. This history goes back to the middle 1800’s.

Mel Fisher Treasure Museum www.melfisher.org has interesting history from the days of Spanish rule. His story has been on TV.
Mallory Square and pier is the spot to be at sunset time. Popular for the carnival style street entertainment with music, food, arts and crafts and the sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. The Sponge Market and Museum, found in Mallory Square, is based on a venture of harvesting natural sponges from the ocean floor. Mallory Square area is the Key West shipwreck with stories of centuries of shipwrecks both modern and in the Spanish exploring days.
Flagler over-sea railway built in 1935 connected mainland USA to Key West. Flagler history was connected to the Rockefeller and Standard Oil money world. The Flagler railroad was destroyed by a hurricane. Today the railroad bed is Hwy 1.

Lots to do as long as one could keep the sun exposure to minimum. We stayed a week in the Key West area.
