David and Elaine's 2009 'Somewhere Else' Roadie travel blog

After leaving Natchez (feeling poorly) we headed up the Natchez Trace to Vicksburg. Raining too hard to check out battlefield, but stopped by the casino for a "quick try at the machines." Would you believe it?? We actually did just that. Sat down to two poker machines and walked out ten minutes later with $260 between us. Amazing!

Stopped by Moose Lodge Chapter 2242 there in Vicksburg. This was one of the friendliest Lodges we've visited. Nice folks.

Left following morning and on to Shrevesport, La. Visited Moose Chapter 1634. Also very friendly. We stayed for music and dancing. What a difference in music styles! Five piece band played really good dance music and you could actually talk while they were playing! No thumping bass beating you to death, no screaming rednecks! People dressed appropriately and behaving. Very mellow. Other lodges could take a lesson from these good folks.

Left Shrevesport Saturday heading for son Clay's house in Grapevine, Texas. Thought we'd make it in about four hours. WRONG! Alternator crapped outin Lindale, near Tyler, Texas (yup.. the place where John King dragged John Bird to his death).

No parts places/car rentals/taxi available in the 1/2 horse town of Lindale, Texas where we were ensconced in a flea bitten Best Western in a DRY FRIGGIN COUNTY until at least Tuesday morning!! I would have called it a "god forsaken" town but there are more churches than people.. We were, however, able to get a drink by walking 1/2 mile up the four lane in the rain to Chilli's where you can pay to become a "club member" and buy watered down expensive margaritas and $3 bottle beer. It was almost, but not quite, worth the hassle to see Princess walking up a highway in the rain.. very possibly a first for her (I learned, by the way, that there are good times and bad times to laugh at her).

Thus, I got to spend my 63rd birthday walking around in circles banging my head on the wall while Princess watched Fox news too loud instead of playing with my grandchildren a little over one hour up the road. Grrr...

Another "Grrr.." I'd like to choke the crap out of the AAA bimbo that said nothing would be available until Tuesday. On Sunday I limped the truck into a Firestone in Tyler (battery so down that it didn't even click when I tried to restart in Firestone parking lot). Guy said "Man, you should have called when you broke down on Saturday. I'd have had you on the road in an hour." Double Grrr..! Anyway a check for $460 got us back on our way.

Monday arrived in Grapevine, Texas and saw grandchildren.. Ta Da!!
