| We visited the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Parks which is one large park combined. It was difficult to get my mind around the fact that 225 million year ago this desert was swamp land with trees and dinosaurs!! The Painted Desert views are various shades of pastels including pink, purple, yellow, red, brown and many other colors difficult to describe. .The logs in the Petrified Forest appeared to have been cut but the ranger explained that they we actually broken from the stress over time. The Petrified Forest National is HUGE but only covers about 1% of the forest, the rest is private land. We also toured Meteor Crater which is the best preserved meteorite impact crater in the world. The hole is 550 ft deep and 2 ½ miles around and was created about 50,000 years ago. That could explain the swamp and dinosaurs thing except for the time frame. |
