Peru Encompassed 2009 travel blog

Our brief for today, first we were to walk to Inti Punku ("Sun Gate"), where we would sit and watch the mist dissipate and the sun rise to reveal the panoramic view of Machupicchu.

While it was still dark at 4am, we began the final leg of the trek to the lost city of Machupicchu! We indeed climbed to 'Inkipunku' or The Sun Gate to witness the mist fade away and sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu.

Afterwards, we started the descent through the ‘House of Guardians’ to explore the temples, houses, terraces, gardens and altars of this mysterious city and civilization. I marveled at the Andean peaks covered in cloud forest green and it dawned on me I was really here.

After we came down to Machupicchu to start our tour of the sanctuary-city. Once the tour was finished, and as it was already 12pm, I took off on my own, catching the bus down a very windy road to the town of Aguas Calientes. It is a charming town. I spent my time wandering through the markets and the stoney streets. But two hours later, what Peru is famous for, a protest began. Though for good reason. Apparently the government is trying to privatise utilities and water increasing the expense to farmers one hundred fold, and further wanting to burn the land they own in the Amazon.

Our train back to Ollantambo was to leave at 1.58 but was delayed until 4.40pm, then when we arrived 2 hours later the traffic was backed up so far, we didn't get back to our hotel until after 8pm. Considering we left camp at 4am- we were just exhausted. Total distance covered today to Machu Pichu: 6km
