|The Colca Canyon runs between the tiny mountain villages of Chivay to Cabanaconde, and is a deep canyon also known as the 'Condor' Canyon. Chivay is where we laid our hats for the night...
This canyon is reportedly the deepest in the world, thought to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA.
What brings increasingly more visitors each year, in addition to the awesome sights, are the Andean condors. Although rare around the world, here in Colca Canyon, we were lucky enough to spot at least 10 at fairly close range as they floated on the rising thermals scanning for carrion far below.
Colca Valley has been known by different names: The Lost Valley of the Incas, The Valley of Wonders, The Valley of Fire and The Territory of the Condor. It has even been called one of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of the World'.
We were treated to a wonderful natural hot spring, where I floated adrift watching the sunset over the mountains then gazing at the stars... and as romantic as that sounds, reality slapped me in the face once I had to get out being that the temperature was a freezing -3 degrees!!
It was soooooo cold that our hosts gave us hot water bottles, in true McGyver style, they were fashioned out of 2l coke bottles!
