Rottnest Island off Perth
A Quokka
Well finally got into Perth after being hassled by a customs officer and stopped by a sniffer dog (Not for drugs but for an apple in my backpack)!! I declared I was carrying almonds and you would swear I was carrying cocaine! They are so strict on all foodstuffs here its a joke!
Perth is a lovely city and quite small, it only took me about half a day to see the main things. Then I headed down to Fremantle and saw the prison there. It was fascinating and they showed us how the executed people etc. As it turned out one of my sister's best friends was in town so we met up. I spent the afternoon running after 4 kids under the age of 5; they don't sit down for five minutes!! I also got to hold an Olympic medal which was so amazing; Craig won it for the Paralympic rugby back in Sydney. It's huge and so heavy!
I am adjusting to Australia slowly but miss Asia loads. Everything is SO expensive it's typical when my funds are starting to dry up! I am now in a dorm room!!! I take back everything I said about two months ago, its just practical and the main reason I did it was to meet more people. Most people live in these hostels for weeks and try to save money to travel again....no thanks! The whole hostel network has exceeded my expectations and I am actually getting a YHA card tomorrow!! Lady Hilton is no more....I tell you I barely recognise myself these days so doubt any of you will on my return!! I walk about 4 hours a day and love being outdoors, I may even join a walking club on my return.
I headed off to Rottnest Island which is a 2 hour boat journey from Perth. I just relaxed on the beach (I was the only one on it) and walked around. You would never believe it was so near Perth as it felt a million miles from anywhere else. So relaxing.... Saw a quokka which is a cross between a rat and a kangaroo. They are quiet sweet once you get over the shock of seeing a huge rat...first impression you see!
