Railee came up on our radar after bumping into Chis and Jess in Ko Tao, so after leaving Ko Phan Gan we decided to give Ko Samui as miss and had straight over to see what Railee had to offer. En route we met Celia and Janine (both South African) and Mat who hails from Ireland, who happened to be heading in the same direction so the five of us joined up and hung out together for the next 5 days. Climbers love Railee, its climbing is meant to be up there with the best and we occasionally sat back in wonder as thee climbers scaled up the overhanging cliffs.
It's quiet season at the moment which means cheap accomodation and we managed to negotiate a great deal at B250 per night at one of the better operators, and handily there was an excellent restaurant close by run by some friendly Thai's and we spent most of our evenings here along with its numerous resident kittens.
One highlight was our kayak trip to to a nearby island. It started off well enough with the kayaks being available at dirt cheap which turned out to be a false economy as the day developed. We set out for an island (can't remember its name) an hour and a half away, and at some point Mat nearly became Robinson Crusoe as his canoe took on water and some 3 hours later he swam back to shore pushing his partially floating canoe all the way. Now we didn't get life jackets which is of course not clever, so the big lesson learnt here is 1) don't hire a canoe without a lifejacket, and 2) check thoroughly for leaks! Now the snorkling at the island was very good and this undeveloped island and its neighbour were beautiful with their powdery white sandy beaches and clear blue water.
We also took a day trip to Ko Phi Phi Don and four other island, I have to say the Ko Phi Phi is beautiful particularly the snorkelling in its surrounding bays. The trip took in the locations used in the film 'The Beach' amongst others and it was a day well spent.
So far Railee is our favourite destination in our trip through Thailand's islands and I would recommend it to ayone, especially during the off season.
