Another long drive took us to Uyuni, a smallish town in Bolivia which is used as the base for trips onto the famous salt flats. Our hotel (Tonito) was excellent - great rooms and showers, so nice after the last 3 days of slumming it. That evening, we had the buffet dinner laid on by the hotel which was fine. We also decided to try drinking at altitude. Was highly entertaining evening! Ended up in some bar owned by a guy called Gabriel and we basically took over the place. Drank lots of water and this seems to counter the altitude effect. Nonetheless I still felt a bit rough the next day for out jeep trip to the salt flats. First stop was the train cemetary where lots of old steam trains are decaying. Hmmm! Then we went to a small town where the people shovel up the salt and package it for sale. Lots of sweet kids round here putting there hands in our pockets, YEs, they aren't stupid!! FInally we drove onto the salt flats which was amazing. The pictures will speak for themselves I think ! Onto an island called Fish Island which is covered in cacti and where the views across the plains were pretty cool. We had lunch included in the tour which was great. After some hanging around we drove to the salt hotel on the flats and had some coffee. Finally we drove back to the entrance of the plains to watch the sunset. Amazing! Actually i just realised how rubbish my descriptions are but I am writing this very late so I cant be bothered to be all artistic about it!!! Pictures should say it all if I can ever get them onto a CD that actually works in this place!!

That evening we had great pizza at the hotel and then had an early night ready for the long drive to Potosi the next day.
