North of Bend is Smith Rock State Park. The park has cliffs of tuff and basalt which are ideal for rock climbing and therefore attracts climbers from across the world. As well as rock climbing the park has a number of hiking trails. We took the trail which wandered along the Crooked River and gave us views not only of the river but also of the climbers scaling the cliffs.
At the end of the walk we stopped and talked to one of the rangers on the geology of the area.
