One "not to be missed" event in Key West is the Annual Great Conch Republic celebration. Crazy events go on for an entire week. We joined large crowds of people gathered along Duval Street to witness the Great Conch Drag Races (think "queens", not cars). What a hoot - everyone needs to do this at least once in their life! In any direction you looked, female impersonators were dressed to the hilt in some of the oddest combinations of clothing you could ever imagine. The drag races involve the queens, in their VERY high heels, running and stumbling through an obstacle course, then pushing "grocery carts" to the end of the street where they down a shooter and get back in line to do it again. Needless to say, after a couple of hours of this, there is more stumbling than running going on. Some of the ladies are downright attractive from far away, but when you get up close, it's easy to see the beard shadows under the thick makeup (eeeewww!). Most of them appear about 7 feet tall, especially when wearing 5" heels. Next week we will go back to see the bed races and "anything goes" parade down Duval Street. Can't wait!
