Today was a free day, and my sore back really appreciated it. Linda had planned to return to the Palenque ruins, and we needed to grocery shop. We started out by sleeping late (8 am) as we had gotten tired of the alarm clock at 6:30. I started on chores while my back would allow it, checking all the tire pressures (including the spare), and inspecting the front suspension after our detour off the pavement yesterday.
We went to breakfast at the hotel, and had Huevos Molhueves (sp?), which consisted of 2 eggs easy over on top of tortillas, black beans and cheese. On top there was a slice of ham, more cheese, peas and a sort of cream. On the side were fried bananas. Very filling!
We went into town, and after a tour we found the Super Che store, sort of a Walmart. It was not such a good idea to shop on Saturday morning, as the shoppers were only out numbered by the troops trying to restock the shelves from pallets of stuff lying in the isles. We also hit the ATM. When we were finished, the temps were over 90 with very high humidity, so Linda retired to the pool, and I spend a couple of hours in the air conditioning writing for this journal.
In the evening we attended Mass in town. The church is very basic, not at all the highly decorated place seen in other parts of Mexico. Outside a festival was going on in the square, and while I debated wandering through it, I deferred to a concern for our security (probably needlessly) and returned to camp.
Sleep was a bit difficult, as the temperature stayed near 80, the humidity was high and the fan won’t run on the batteries as the motor demand is too high for our inverter. But, knowing that tomorrow’s drive would be long and demanding, I managed.
